Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - Justin Holloway hit a home run on the second pitch he saw of his first professional at-bat as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (10-9) fell to the Laredo Broncos (5-14) 6-4 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The loss breaks a five-game winning streak for the WhiteWings and gives the Broncos their first road win of the season (1-10).

The Broncos got on the board right away against Jorge Lugo. With two outs in the top of the first, Mario Mendez walked and Argelis Nunez hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.

With two outs in the top of the third, Miguel Ortiz doubled and Mendez hit an RBI-single, moving to second on the throw. Nunez followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0.

The WhiteWings tied it against Gustavo Vasquez in the bottom of the third. Holloway led off the inning with the home run. Casey Allen followed with a single and Kenny Hart drew a seven-pitch walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Jonathan Poterson hit a two-run single.

The WhiteWings took the lead in the fourth. With one out, Joaquin Rodriguez singled and stole second, moving to third when the throw went into centerfield. Holloway followed with an RBI-single to make it 4-3.

The Broncos took the lead back against Juan Diaz (2-1) in the top of the eighth. Mendez led off with a triple and Argelis Nunez walked. Mendez scored and Nunez moved to second when Andres Santos reached on fielder's choice. One batter later, Rafael Ozuna hit an RBI-single. One out later, Jamie Morales singled, and on a bobble by Hart in right field, Santos scored to make it 6-4.

Travis Parker (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but in the eighth, Welinson Baez and Rodriguez drew leadoff walks to force the Broncos to bring in the closer, Tristan Crawford. Ryan Kottke attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but fouled off the final pitch for strike three. Allen then struck out swinging and Hart grounded out to first base to end the inning.

Crawford pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The WhiteWings will look to win their seventh-straight game for the first time and sweep the four-game series against the Broncos tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Maximino de la Cruz (0-1) will pitch for the WhiteWings.
