Amarillo Dillas News Release

CANYON, TX - Whether it is football or rodeo, basketball or volleyball, or anything in between, athletics have played an important part in the Panhandle-Plains region. Panhandle Plains Players is the first of two exhibits that officially launched PPHM's sports collection highlighting this region's athletics. Visitors can see items from Donny Anderson, Alex O' Brien, Mike Scroggins, Joe Lombard, Mark Lee, Ryan Palmer and many more. The exhibition examines high school, college and professional athletes from this region, and will be followed next year by an exhibit focusing on West Texas A&M University athletics to coincide with the university's 100th anniversary. Mark Lee is recognizable to most people for his work as the leading force behind the Amarillo Dillas but the Panhandle Plains Players exhibit focuses on his professional playing career that spanned over four years while playing for the San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Detroit Tigers. Lee is in his fourth season as the Dillas General Manager which during his tenure the organization has set consecutive United League attendance records in their first three years of play. Not only has Amarillo been king in the attendance category but, the club has equaled that string by winning the Amarillo Globe News "Best of Amarillo - Best Sports Team", the last three years running. "A lot of great athletes have come out of Amarillo and the Panhandle area and to be in the same company of these individuals is truly an honor", Dillas General Manager Mark Lee said. "I played in Amarillo in the late 1970's and fell in love with the town and the people and although I was born and raised in California, Amarillo is really home for me".

The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum's "Panhandle Plains Players: Athletics on the Golden Spread" exhibit is currently open to visitors and will run until October 11, 2009.

Amarillo is amidst an eight game road trip that concludes tomorrow night in Coastal Bend before the Dillas return home for a back-to-back four game series against the Thunder on Thursday, July 2nd. Budweiser Thirsty Thursday will kick-off the holiday weekend that will include a giveaway on Friday, Fireworks Show on Saturday, and free admission on Sunday.
