Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - A nine-run fifth inning, keyed by a long grand slam by Paul Hoilman, helped the Boise Hawks to a 13-6 victory over the Spokane Indians at Memorial Stadium.
The win by the Hawks eliminated the Indians from the Northwest League East Division first-half title chase, as Tri-City claimed the pennant. Boise helped the cause with their most prolific scoring night of the season.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, Boise sent 13 men to the plate to blow the game wide open. RBI singles from Willson Contreras and Pin-Chieh Chen gave the Hawks the lead, with a Brad Zapenas RBI double pushed the lead to 4-2. Hoilman greeted reliever Leonel De Los Santos with his eighth homer of the season - the first grand slam of the season by the Hawks, making it 8-2. Contreras capped the inning with a two-run triple - with the nine runs scored by the hosts in the frame the most by a Boise team in over a decade.
It was enough for starter Yao-Lin Wang, who fanned five in five innings to pick up his third win of the season, with Jose Rosario going the final four frames, striking out a season-high six, for his second save. Chen, Contreras, and Blair Springfield each had two hits for the Hawks - with Springfield capping the scoring with a three-run homer in the seventh.
Spokane was led by a 2-for-4 night from Hirotoshi Onaka, including a pair of triples, while Yefry Castillo went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Indians.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with Su-Min Jung meeting Santo Perez at 7:15 p.m.
NOTES - De Los Santos was ejected by plate umpire J.J. January in the fifth after hitting Boise catcher Yaniel Cabezas with a pitch following the Hoilman homer...it was the seventh time the Hawks have scored 10-or-more runs, but their first since July 1...Boise is now 4-0 against Spokane at Memorial Stadium in 2011.
