Dust Devils Clinch Playoff Spot in Yakima Sunday

July 24, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears were defeated 10-4 by the Tri-City Dust Devils Sunday at Yakima County Stadium. The win by the Dust Devils clinched a playoff berth, as the Dust Devils will be one of the two teams out of the East Division playing in the postseason come September.

Bears starting pitcher Teo Gutierrez had his roughest outing of the season, allowing a season high nine hits and a season high eight runs (all earned) in a season-low four and two thirds innings. Gutierrez took the loss for the first time this season, as his record dropped to 3-1.

Five runs were scored by the Dust Devils in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Bears got a solo home run from David Narodowski and an RBI-double from Carter Bell that scored Danny Pulfer to pull within 5-2 in the bottom of the third. The Dust Devils went on to score three runs in fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, while all the Bears could manage was two runs in the sixth off of a Henry Zabala double and a passed ball.

The bullpen for the Bears gave up a pair of runs after Gutierrez was done. Mike Blake had four strikeouts in one and a third innings, but he also allowed one run. Miles Reagan allowed one run in three innings of work.

The Bears were outhit 14-8, with only Zach Jones finishing with a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Only two players went hitless and the Bears mixed in three extra-base hits in the loss.

For the second-straight game the Bears recorded two outfield assists. Both on Sunday were from Marc Bourgeois, who leads the team with six on the season in just 17 games in the outfield.

The Bears are now 13-24 on the season and the team finishes the first half tomorrow with another game against the Tri-City Dust Devils. Game time at Yakima County Stadium is scheduled for 7:05. Bears lefty Adam Kudryk is expected to start, while right-handed pitcher Ricardo Ferrer is the scheduled starter for Tri-City.
