Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- After a shaky opening weekend, the Rockford IceHogs rebounded to beat the Quad City Mallards 6-1 at the Rockford MetroCentre before 3,689 fans on Friday. Led by Steve Yetman, the Hogs offense clicked and goaltender Brenden Cuthbert made 21 saves to earn the win between the pipes.

The IceHogs jumped on the Mallards with three goals in less than four minutes midway through the first period. Winger Kevin Ulanski netted the opener on the power-play at 8:39, his first of the season, set up perfectly by Jesse Bennefield on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Later, defenseman Matt Gens slapped home a 4-on-3 power-play marker, beating Quad City goalie Jason Tapp at 11:06.

Ulanski added his second goal of the night when he flipped a Mike Doyle centering pass, while falling down, past Tapp at 12:16 of the opening period. After a scoreless second period, Rockford's offense went back to work in the final 20 minutes to put the game away.

Just 1:03 into the third, Yetman knocked home a short-handed goal, his second tally of the season, after another pretty set-up by Bennefield. Gens potted his second of the night at 7:27 of the final frame with a slapper from the point before the Mallards ruined Cuthbert's shutout bid. Center Glenn Detulleo fired home the only Mallards marker of the night off of a feed from newly acquired Don Parsons at 12:27. Rockford center Nicolas Corbeil finished off the scoring, and the Mallards, with a tally at 15:46 on a delayed penalty call.

For the third straight game, the IceHogs outshot the opposition, this time 43-22. Tapp made 37 saves in the loss and was tossed from the game after a ruckus at 18:29 of the third period. The Mallards puck-stopper was assessed 20 overall penalty minutes on the night. Yetman completed his night with four points (1g-3a), Ulanski added three points (2g-1a) while Bennefield and defenseman Dan Boeser chipped in two assists.

Next Home Game: Saturday, Oct. 28 vs. Chicago Hounds. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The pesky Hounds return to Rockford and the IceHogs will have revenge on their minds. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive a Transistor Radio courtesy of WNTA-AM 1330 and WXRX-FM 104.9. Beginning Saturday, IceHogs fans will be able to listen to the game at the Rockford MetroCentre!
