Hogs drop game 7-2 to Wilmington

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winston-Salem Warthogs (14-9) dropped the first game of a four game series to Wilmington, 7-2 on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. Ryan Wing (3-1) lost for the first time this season. Wing gave up four runs in the fourth, and scattered six hits in six innings. Chris Tierney evened his record for the Blue Rocks at 2-2. Tierney tossed five innings and gave up two runs on six hits.

The Warthogs took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Brian Becker and Eric Welsh both singled. Becker scored from third base on a Mike Morse RBI ground out. The Blue Rocks took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Darren Fenster and Ruben Gotay singled and Chris Fallon walked to load the bases. Scott Walter forced home Fenster with an RBI ground out to tie the game at 1. Trey Dyson followed with a walk to load the bases again. A wild pitch got by hogs' catcher Chris Stewart, but Wing covered the plate and tagged out Gotay. With two outs, Justin Cowan delivered the hit of the game, a three-run homerun to left that put the Blue Rocks up 4-1.

The Warthogs came back and scored a run on an Eric Welsh single in the bottom of the fourth. The Blue Rock would add some insurance with a three run ninth inning. Luis Cotto and Ruben Gotay had RBI singles in the ninth. Rolando Garza, Josh Fields, and Brandon O'Neil each tossed for the Warthogs giving up a combined three runs on three hits in three innings.

The second game of the four game series will be Friday night at 7:15pm. The Warthogs will start RHP Franklin Francisco (1-1, 3.38), while the Blue Rocks counter with RHP Brian Bass (1-0, 5.29). All the play by play will be heard on 600/1200am WSJS and on www.warthogs.com.
