
Keys Take Game 1 Against Cannons, 5-2

The Frederick Keys (8-15) took Game 1 of their four-game series with the Potomac Cannons, 5-2, in front of 851 fans at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA on Thursday, May 1. The victory breaks the Keys 3-game losing streak and gives the Keys 3 victories in 4 games on the season against Potomac.
Left-handed starting pitcher Rommie Lewis (1-2) tossed 5.1 innings of 5-hit baseball, allowing 2 runs and 2 walks while striking out 5. He gave way with 1 out in the 6th inning and a 4-1 lead to right-handed reliever Carl Makowsky, who allowed a RBI sacrifice fly before retiring the side. Right-handed closer Sendy Rleal pitched a perfect 9th inning, striking out 2, to record his 3rd save of the season.
The Keys scored 3 runs in the 6th inning to break open a 1-1 tie. A base hit by first baseman Mike Huggins and an error on Cannons first baseman Chris Williamson put runners on the corners. Right fielder Gary Cates followed with a RBI double, and catcher Mike Seestedt, playing his first game since joining the Keys from Class AAA Ottawa, hit a 2 RBI base hit to push the Keys lead to 4-1.
In the 8th inning, Seestedt hit a RBI double to finish the scoring at 5-2. Seestedt finished the night 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Cates had 2 doubles in 4 at-bats and drove in a run, and shortstop Brandon Fahey went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
The Cannons (9-16) started the scoring with a RBI double by shortstop Jeff Bannon in the 1st inning. Lewis then settled down to get the next 10 batters in order. The Keys scored a run in the 5th inning on Fahey's RBI double.
Game 2 of the four-game series with the Cannons will begin Friday, May 2 at 7:05 p.m. Kurt Birkins (0-2, 9.98), looking for his first victory of the season, will take the mound for the Keys. The Cannons will send right-handed pitcher Daylan Childress (0-4, 5.79) to the hill. Childress is tied for first in the Carolina League with 4 losses.
