Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- On the day after Thanksgiving, the Rockford IceHogs appeared to have a little turkey hangover. The Hogs fell behind the archrival Quad City Mallards 3-0 in the games first 5:56, battled back, but allowed two late goals to drop a 5-3 contest in front of 4,373 at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Quad City was effective early, especially on the power play. Defenseman Sergei Durdin put QC on the board at 3:25 when he flipped a cross ice pass from Chad Woollard past Rockford goalie Brenden Cuthbert. Then Durdin helped set up the Mallards second power-play goal at 4:57 as his slapper from the point was redirected past Cuthbert by center Don Parsons. The barrage continued when winger Brett Pilkington beat Cuthbert short-side on a 2-on-1 break at 5:56 for the 3-0 lead.
The IceHogs countered to score the game's next three markers to tie the contest at 3-3. Winger Chaz Johnson began the comeback at 7:26 of the opening period, carrying the puck around the net and firing it past Mallards goalie Zach Sikich. Before the end of the frame, Hogs defenseman Luke Fritshaw lit his second lamp of the season when his shot, initially stopped by Sikich, popped into the air and over the goal-line to cut the deficit down to one goal at 19:43.
Just 35 seconds into the second period, Rockford center Preston Mizzi tied the game when he beat Sikich for his sixth of the campaign. After six goals in the game's first 20:35, another tally wouldn't be accounted for, for another 34:46. After Rockford failed to clear its zone, Mallards defenseman Brent Currie fired the go-ahead goal past Cuthbert at 15:21. Parsons later gave Quad City some insurance knocking in his second power-play goal of the night at 17:29.
The special teams did the Hogs in on Friday, as the power play went 0-for-10 and the Mallards advantage finished the night 3-for-10. The Hogs were outshot by the Mallards for the third straight game, this time 39-36.
