WALLA WALLA, Wa. - As the top of the first inning unfolded, the sight seemed all too familiar- another slow-paced, high-scoring game appeared to be underway.

But such was not the case at Borleske Stadium on Wednesday, as the Walla Walla Sweets defeated the Kelowna Falcons, 6-2 in a well-pitched effort.

Whitman College left-hander Spencer Hobson (1-0) was brilliant through seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits against a Kelowna lineup that put eight runs on the scoreboard the previous night.

"He really started locating his fastball and locating his changeup," said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi Hobson. "(He) still needs to get that breaking ball (working), but overall a really good performance."

And the stellar pitching continued from there, as Cody Carroll, a right-hander from the University of Southern Mississippi, provided two innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

In regards to Carroll, Biagi reflected, "I would envision Cody working his way into the starting rotation at some point. He's got a good fastball and a good breaking ball, he locates and has some presence on the hill."

Trey Kamachi led off the game with a double to right-center field, stole third, and then scored on a single by Scotland Church. The Sweets, however, answered the challenge promptly, drawing three walks and scoring four runs against Kelowna starter Jeremy Alderman (1-1) on an Andrew Mendenhall RBI triple, an error, a wild pitch and a single by J.J. Robinson, his first hit of the season.

The Sweets would then be held scoreless over the next five innings, but the Sweets extended their lead in the seventh by scoring two runs on a pair of Kelowna errors as well as base hits by Robinson and John Skrbec.

Meanwhile for the Falcons, a Nick Minteer solo home run to left field in the fourth inning was the only other run the club could manage against Hobson, and Kelowna's offense managed only a single and a walk over the final five innings.

Moving to 2-3 on the season, the Sweets went home pleased with the fact that the team's two glaring weak spots so far this season- pitching and defense- showed signs of significant improvement.

The Sweets will look to win the series against the Falcons Thursday at Borleske Stadium, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM.
