HiToms Sign Pair of Right Handers

HIGH POINT/THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Jonny Hoffman a right handed pitcher from Indiana and Kurt Giller another right handed pitcher from Oral Roberts have both signed with the HiToms for the summer, the club announced.

As a sophomore, Hoffman posted a 2-3 record with an ERA of 8.80. However, he came on strong at the end of the season. Making eight starts last season for the Hoosier's, six of the starts came during Big Ten play, during the league schedule, he became the teams Saturday starter where he struck out 26 hitters and issued just 16 free passes over his 45 innings of work.

The 6-0 pitcher was overpowering during his senior campaign at El Camino High School in Oceanside, Calif. As a senior he fanned 56 batters in 49 2/3 innings and allowed just 12 walks. Hoffman also holds the school records for strikeouts in a career (106), season (56) and game (12). Adding to his list of achievements, the right hander became just the sixth player in greater San Diego history to hurl two no-hitters in the same season, this feat was accomplished during his junior season. Additionally, the two no-hitters were the first in school history and was park of 10 consecutive no-hit innings.

So far this season, Hoffman has made 13 appearances, all in relief. Over his 19 innings of work, the has struck out 17 and walked just two hitters posting an earned run average of 4.74.

The sophomore is majoring in sports marketing and management at Indiana.

Kurt Giller is also a sophomore originally from Manhattan, Kan., he spent his first season playing college baseball at the University of Nebarska where he was 0-1 with a save and had an ERA of 11.80 over eight appearances. Giller had some control issues over his 13 2/3 innings with nine walks and 11 strikeouts. However, he had to go under the knife and had season ending elbow surgery in April.

A 2009 graduate of Manhattan High, Giller helped the Indians to a State Championship runner-up season in 2007 going a perfect 9-0 on the season with a microscopic 0.91 ERA. After completing high school, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted the right hander in the 21st round, but he elected not to sign.

He is a business administration major at Oral Roberts.

The HiToms are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 800 alumni drafted and 42 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
