Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs have announced the addition of Cody Davis and Frank DeJiulio, a pair of juniors from the University of Tampa. Davis, an outfield and pitcher, and DeJiulio, a pitcher, will both be making their SwampDogs debut.
The 5-10, 170-pound Davis completed his first season with Tampa in 2011 after spending the first two years of his collegiate career at Hillsborough Community College. A native of Loxahatchee, Fla., Davis batted .340 is his first season at Tampa, despite starting just 14 games for the Spartans. He also appeared in 11 games on the mound, including one start. The righthander posted a 1-1 record with two saves and a 2.51 ERA, striking out 15 in just 14.1 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .216 average against.
DeJiulio, a 6-3, 205-pound righthander from Ocala, Fla., also completed his first year at Tampa this past season. He appeared in 16 games for the Spartans, including nine starts, going 5-3 to lead the team in wins. He has been selected in each of the last two MLB drafts - by the Cleveland Indians in the 45th round in 2010, and by the Chicago Cubs in the 44th round in 2009.
"Frank and Cody will be great additions to our 2011 club," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "I expect them both to play key rolls in our success. Cody is a versatile player who has the ability to run, throw and swing the bat as well as pitch at the end of games. Frank will give us a quality arm who has been drafted twice and has competed at the highest level at school and during the summer."
Davis and DeJiulio will join Tampa teammate Eric Grabe with the SwampDogs this season. Grabe will be playing his third summer for the SwampDogs in 2011.
The trio helped lead Tampa (35-15) to a 12th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. The defending South Region champs are the sixth seed and will open with third-seeded Harding University this Thursday, May 19.
