Hill City Howlers News Release
THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg lost 6-5 to Kinston in the middle-game of a three-game series at Grainger Stadium...Tonight the Hillcats try to salvage a win in this series in the final game of a three-game series and the last game of seven in a row against the Indians...
VS. KINSTON: Last season the Indians won the season series against the Hillcats 12-8...The Cats hold the all-time edge 136-133, but they are 60-76 against the K-Tribe at Grainger Stadium...This season Kinston has the edge 7-6 and both teams have won three games in Grainger Stadium...
FURIOUS RALLY FALLS SHORT...AGAIN: Last night the Hillats were down by four runs going into the ninth before scoring three runs and loading the bases with two outs...All-Star closer Luis Perdomo got Tony Mansolino to pop out into foul territory to end the game...Tuesday night the Cats entered the ninth inning down 4-0 before scoring three runs...Lynchburg had the tying run and third base with two outs, but Perdomo got pinch-hitter Eddie Prasch to ground out to end the ballgame...Perdomo leads the league with 17 saves, he is 6-for-6 in save opportunities against the Cats and on to separate occasions he has saved games on back-to-back nights...
DRIVING 'EM IN: OF Jared Keel drove in three runs last night in the Cats 6-5 loss...The former third baseman has knocked in 13 runs in his last seven games and has taken over the team lead in RBI with 41...
LEAVING 'EM ON: Last night the Hillcats left 13 men on base as a team...Individually Tony Mansolino left on 10 men including three in the ninth with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run on second...
BACK AT SHORT: Last night Angel Gonzalez played shortstop for the first time this season...Every game Gonzalez has played this year he has played second base after he played shortstop the last four seasons...
EARLY EXIT: Manager Jeff Branson has only been ejected two times this season including his early removal from Tuesday night's game...The two situations were strangely similar...On both occasions umpires Andy Dudones and Matt Abbot were working the game, LHP Tony Watson was on the mound and both disputes were whether or not a ball was fair or foul that was hit down the left field line...Abbot was the home plate umpire and tossed Branson the first time in Salem and Tuesday night Dudones had the call and the ejection of the Hillcats skipper...The call in question was an RBI "double" off the bat of Beau Mills who later scored in the inning...It proved to be a crucial call in a one-run Kinston win...
FINDING HIS FLOW: LHP Daniel Moskos tossed seven and 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball Saturday night en route to earning his sixth win of the season and his third straight victory...The fourth overall pick from last year's draft only allowed three hits, struckout seven and walked just one...Over his last four outings the former Clemson Tiger has gone 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA (three earned runs in 24 innings)...That after a three-game stretch in which he went 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA (13 earned runs in eight and 2/3 innings)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Shawn Nottingham comes down from Double-A Akron to make the start tonight for Kinston...With the Aeros this year he has 0-2, 7.09 ERA in 19 appearances out of the bullpen...The lefty was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round of 2003 out of Massillon Jackson high school in northern Ohio...He was traded to the Indians in 2006 and made one start for Kinston (4.0 ip, 1 er)...Last season he started for Akron and went 9-12 with a 4.77 ERA in 27 games (26 starts)...Coming into this season 79 of his 97 appearances were starts, including 79 of his last 82 outings...
