Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off a 5-game Western Hockey League home stand Friday night with a 5-4 overtime victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Schael Higson scored twice and set up three others and Connor Gutenberg notched the game winner as the Wheat Kings rallied from a 4-3 third period deficit to improve to 5-0-1-0 on the season.

Leading 3-2 through forty minutes, the Wheat Kings surrendered back to back third period goals and trailed for the first time in the game when Tristin Langan scored his second of the game with less than four minutes remaining in regulation time.

With Brandon netminder Jiri Patera on the bench for the extra attacker, it was Luka Burzan to the rescue when he jumped on a rebound and pumped the tying goal past Moose Jaw netminder Brodan Salmond with 1:27 to play. For Burzan, it was his team leading seventh goal of the season.

That set the stage for Gutenberg's overtime heroics. The 19-year old veteran jumped on a loose puck, raced up the ice and while trying to settle down a puck that was on its edge he fired a knuckleball over the shoulder of Salmond.

Jonny Hooker rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who were outshot 41-24 and gave up two Moose Jaw powerplay goals in the second period.

Josh Brook, Jett Woo also scored for the Warriors, who lost for the third time in four games against Brandon this season.

Brandon coach David Anning says while it was far from a masterpiece, getting the two points was important for his club that plays host to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.

"I thought we missed some key scoring chances," he told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun. "I thought that was the theme throughout the game. We didn't bear down on our scoring chances and we didn't hit the net. As a result, we chased the game a little bit and gave up too much."
