Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Thunder today announced their first player signing for the 2006-07 season, veteran defenseman Daniel Tetrault.
A six-year veteran out of La Broquiere, Manitoba, Tetrault (pronounced TAY-troh) enjoyed the finest season of his pro career with the Thunder in 2005-06. One of just five Thunder players to appear in all 69 games, Tetrault finished second among all CHL blueliners and led all Thunder defensemen with 57 points.
"Daniel is clearly one of the top two-way defensemen in the CHL, so signing him was a top priority", said Thunder head coach Mark French. "Not only does he do everything you ask of him, but he is a tremendous leader in the locker room and the perfect guy to build our defense around."
The 2006 Thunder Defenseman of the Year and a runner-up for the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman Award, Tetrault led all CHL defenseman with 12 power play goals, tying Paul Esdale's Thunder single-season record for most power play goals by a defenseman. He also led all Thunder players in the postseason with five points in five games.
"Returning to Wichita was a very easy decision", said Tetrault. "The fan support is phenomenal and I can honestly say that I have never been treated better by another organization during my career."
Drafted by the Montreal Canadians in the fourth round of the 1997 NHL Draft (91st overall), Tetrault began his pro career in 2000 with the Austin Ice Bats and a year later was named the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman, notching 43 points in 58 games. A three-time CHL All-Star, Tetrault also spent part of the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, notching four points in 34 games.
Prior to joining the Thunder, he spent the 2004-05 season with the New Mexico Scorpions, where he played in all 60 games and led New Mexico defensemen with six goals. Tetrault, who has twice attended NHL training camp with Montreal, has amassed 64 goals and 213 points in 374 pro games.
The Thunder, coming off their most successful campaign in 12 years, will begin their 15th CHL season on October 20th. The Thunder finished the 2005-06 season ranked second in the CHL and seventh overall among North America's 54 "AA" hockey teams, averaging 5,719 fans per game.
