High Point Rockers News Release
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point Rockers continued to announce signings for their 2020 roster with the addition of first baseman and right fielder Matt Fields. The 34-year-old was signed after participating in a recent Meet-A-Prospect tryout, run by Rockers Bench Coach Billy Horn.
"Adding Matt is another testament to what Billy brings to our coaching staff," noted Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. "His ability to attract players of this caliber to offseason tryouts helps us tremendously and Matt is one of those guys who we expect to make a strong impact on our 2020 team."
This will be the 13th year of professional baseball for Fields, who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2004 Amateur Draft. His last two years came in 2015 and 2016 as a member of the Somerset Patriots. After reaching Triple-A Omaha in the Kansas City organization, Fields signed on with the Patriots in late 2015 to help them win the Atlantic League championship by batting .261 with five homers and 21 runs driven in in just 14 games.
A Seattle, Wash. native, Fields has played primarily first base in his 12-year career, posting a .987 fielding percentage there. His ability to also play the corner outfield positions, and some third base, offers some versatility to a Rockers defensive alignment that ranked third in the Atlantic League in 2019 with a .978 fielding percentage.
Fields joins pitcher John Brownell and infielder Tyler Ladendorf on the 2020 roster for High Point, a team coming off a history making season where they became the first expansion squad in Atlantic League history to make the playoffs in their inaugural year. Tickets are already on sale for the 2020 campaign via Season Ticket Memberships or Group Outings. Fans can book their trip to BB&T Point by calling (336) 888-1000 or by sliding to HighPointRockers.com. Opening Day is Thursday, April 30th at 7:00pm when the Rockers host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
