August 17, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
One game after giving up 18 runs in 19 hits in a blowout loss to Lake Elsinore, Jon Hesketh tossed eight scoreless inning and combined with Brian Moran on a three-hit shutout to beat Rancho Cucamonga 1-0 Tuesday night at the Epicenter.
Hesketh (3-3) won his third straight start in his best outing since joining the Mavericks in early July. The left was in control from the start, allowing just three hits and a walk over eight frames. Hesketh also set a new sesaon-high with 10 strikeouts.
The only real jam Hesketh encountered came in the third when Kevin Ramos led off with a double. After Darwin Perez sacrificed Ramos to third, Hesketh struck out Mike Trout and Alberto Rosario to end the inning.
In the fourth, the Mavs had runners at second and third with one out. Kuo Hui Lo sent a ground ball to second, and Johermyn Chavez was thrown out at the plate. Shaver Hansen followed with an inning- ending flyout.
The game's lone run scored in the fifth. Maximo Mendez singled with one out and went to second on a fielding error by Mike Trout. With two out, Edilio Colina singled down the third base line to plate Mendez.
Hesketh had retired nine straight before allowing a one-out double to Dillon Baird in the seventh. He bounced back with a flyout and strikeout to keep the Quakes scoreless.
Although the Mavs had chances to add more runs, they couldn't come up with any other clutch hits to extend the lead.
It didn't matter, though, as Hesketh and Moran retired the final eight batters of the game. Moran got each of the first two batters of the ninth to flyout on the first pitch, and then struck out Gabe Jacobo to end the game and earn his first save with the Mavs.
Quakes starting pitcher Orangel Arenas took a tough-luck loss, allowing one run over seven innings. Arenas (6-3) scattered seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Mavs will look to tie the Quakes atop the Wild Card standing when they meet Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
