Pitching stole the show once again for the Mountaineers, as they were able to shut out the first place New Bedford Bay Sox Friday night at Recreation Field in Montpelier, 3-0. Starter Brian Herrmann (Northport, NY/ Stony Brook) pitched six stellar innings, striking out 9 while only allowing two hits. Vermont then brought in lefty Tyler Arella (East Northport, NY/ Villanova) for the next three innings, striking out five to record the save.

After scoring just one run in the last 18 innings, the Mountaineers struck for a pair of runs in the first inning. Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI./Michigan State) singled to left field to start the inning. After Kelley stole second, Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, Fl./Lock Haven) ripped a single to right field to score his teammate. Samuel Duran (Melbourne, Fl./Nova Southern) followed up with a single to left center, scoring Achuff all the way from first base to give Vermont a 2-0 lead.

Achuff scored again in the third after starting the inning with a triple. He crossed the plate on a Duran's second RBI of the night.

New Bedford threatened to score in the bottom of the ninth. After Arella recorded the first two out on just two pitches, back to back singles from Christian Aybar (Pawtucket, RI/ New England College) and Robert Emery (San Francisco, CA/ U. San Francisco) to bring the tying run up to the plate. Arella was then able to get Thomas Seidl (Wellesley, MA/ Harvard) to fly out to right to end the game.

Herrmann picked up the win for the Mountaineers, and Tylor Arruda (New Bedford, MA/ UMass Boston) took the loss for the Bay Sox, going five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out four.

The Mountaineers (1-2) travel to Keene Saturday to take on the Swamp Bats, first pitch scheduled for 6:30. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
