
Keene Wins Their First Game of the Year

KEENE, N.H.- The Keene SwampBats were able to notch their first win of the 2018 season with a 10-5 victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks. The 'Bats got the scoring going when second baseman Jake Whitcomb singled to centerfield, scoring Buddy Dewaine and Cordell Dunn. Centerfielder Joe Breaux hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the third inning deep over the left centerfield wall, extending the lead to 3 to 0. Brandon Smith followed suit with a two-run homerun of his own, to make it 5 to 0.
The Upper Valley Nighthawks scored three runs in the top of 4th inning to cut the lead to 5 to 3. Keene was able to get back at Upper Valley with 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th, including another RBI single by Jake Whitcomb, extending the lead to 10 to 3. Whitcomb and 3rd baseman Mitchell Golden made an impact on the base-paths also, each getting a stolen base, part of five total in the game.
Keene's Kyle Whitten, the starting pitcher, earned a no-decision tonight, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 4. Nighthawks' pitcher Grayson McLeod, the losing pitcher, went 3 1/3 giving up 7 runs, all earned, on six hits, while striking out 2 and walking three.
The 'Bats are back at it again tomorrow versus the Vermont Mountaineers at Keene's Alumni Field.
The Nighthawks are home against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats tomorrow night at 6:30.
