Nighthawks Fall to Swamp Bats

June 8, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

KEENE, NH. - Drew Tipton went 3-5 and collected a pair of doubles for the second consecutive night, and Jordan DiValerio turned in a stellar relief appearance, but the Nighthawks could not capitalize on it as they fell to the Keene Swamp Bats 10-5 on the road Friday night.

The Swamp Bats struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning when outfielder Jake Whitcomb singled to drive in a pair of baserunners and take an early 2-0 load.

Upper Valley countered one inning later when Greg Hardison (UNC Greensboro) and Drew Tipton (Arkansas State University) pieced together a pair of doubles to scrape one run across and cut Keene's lead in half.

Keene's offense came to life again in the home-half of the third inning when Joe Breaux led off the inning with a solo homer and Brandon Smith followed with a two-run shot over the left field fence.

Battling back in the top of the 4th, Eric Feliz (University of Notre Dame) and Hardison led an offensive charge to drive in three runs and get the Nighthawks within striking distance, as the Swamp Bats clung to their 5-4 lead.

The excitement did not last for long, as the Swamp Bats blew the game open with a nightmare fourth inning. Keene plated five runs on five hits, capitalized on a Nighthawks error, and moved runners on a passed ball, which gave them a 10-4 lead after four innings.

Matt Tarabek (Fordham University) homered to lead off the 6th inning, but his efforts could not overcome the 10-5 deficit that the Swamp Bats clung to for the remainder of the game.

Nighthawks starter Greyson McLeod (University of West Georgia) tossed 3.1 innings, gave up six hits, seven runs, walked three, and fanned two batters. Keene also dialed in on Upper Valley reliever Stephen Hansen (Iona College), as he gave up three runs on three hits and walked two batters while finishing off the 4th inning. Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph's University) had an exceptional performance out of the bullpen, holding the Swamp Bats to three hits over five innings and striking out five.

The Nighthawks return to the Upper Valley tomorrow for their home opener at Maxfield Sports Complex against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at 6:30 PM. Fans can look forward to a Magnet Schedule Giveaway sponsored by Mascoma Savings Bank, where all attending will receive a 2018 magnet schedule. Sunday will be Princess & Pirate Night.
