LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Elian Herrera hit a first inning homer to start a 3-for-5 night and the 66ers won their fifth straight road game with a 7-4 decision at The Diamond on Tuesday.
The 66ers led 6-2 into the eighth but the Storm scored twice in the frame to pull within two runs.
The Sixers added an insurance run in the ninth before the Storm brought the tying run to the plate with no outs in the ninth against reliever Zach Schreiber. The right-handed reliever buckled down to strike out Matt Clark, then induced a groundout before coaxing a game-ending fly out from James Darnell to seal the win.
Steve Johnson (7-4) was at his best with men on base, stranding five base runners while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in 5 innings for his team-leading sixth road win.
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Scott Van Slyke hit his team-leading twelfth home run of the season, a solo shot to left off Lake Elsinore starter Nick Schmidt that tied the game.
Inland Empire rallied of Schmidt in the fifth, with Garett Green and Christian Lara each singling to start the rally. With one out, Herrera lined an RBI single to center before Trayvon Robinson added a run with a run-scoring groundout.
An inning later, Van Slyke and Alex Garabedian drew walks from Schmidt to start the frame and both came in to score on Lara's clutch two-out, two-run triple to center.
The five-game road-winning streak is the longest since 2002, when Inland Empire won nine in a row on the road.
Inland Empire and Lake Elsinore reconvene Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. from The Diamond with RHP Tim Sexton (4-8, 2.91) taking the ball for the 66ers while RHP Aaron Breit (0-2, 3.07) makes a spot start for the Storm. The Sixers return to Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Wednesday, July 15 for a four-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all future 66ers games are available at www.66ers.com or by visiting the 66ers ticket office at 280 South E Street in San Bernardino.
