Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jan Hernandez launched his sixth home run of the season, and Cole Irvin dealt six solid innings in a 3-2 loss as the Threshers settled for a series split with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night.
Clearwater (18-10) pulled to within one and twice put the tying run in scoring position, but Jupiter (13-15) managed to hold the Threshers off the board through the final three innings.
The Hammerheads opened the scoring in the second, when Brad Haynal doubled and scored on a Brian Schales triple off the right field wall.
Irvin (3-2) got Rodrigo Vigil to fly out to shallow right for the second out, but JJ Gould singled to center to score Schales and make it 2-0.
Jupiter added a third run in the fourth inning. Vigil doubled up the third base line, and Gould followed with a double to right to bring Vigil home.
Irvin retired the next six he faced in order, giving Clearwater six innings in the start. The lefty permitted three runs on eight hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out four.
Scott Squier held Clearwater scoreless through four before Hernandez greeted him with a long drive to start the fifth.
Hernandez jumped on a 2-1 offering and hit a towering fly over the wall in left for his team-leading sixth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Damek Tomscha led off the sixth inning with a walk, and Wilson Garcia followed with a single up the middle. Jose Pujols grounded into a double play, but Deivi Grullon came through by dropping a single to right to score Tomscha and bring the Threshers to within one.
Squier (1-4) turned in a career-high 6.2 innings in the win for Jupiter, holding the Threshers to two runs on seven hits and three walks.
The Threshers put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth against reliever Steven Farnworth, when Drew Stankiewicz knocked a double to left with one out.
Farnworth struck out Emmanuel Marrero, but Herlis Rodriguez worked a walk to put the winning run aboard. The right-hander then induced a grounder to first from Cornelius Randolph to end the ballgame, earning his second save.
The Threshers open a three-game series at Florida on Friday, when Alberto Tirado (1-1) takes the hill against lefty Ricardo Sanchez (1-3). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:50 p.m.
