Daytona Tortugas News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Tortugas rode a five-run first-inning to a 5-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium. RHP Vladimir Gutierrez struck out a career-high nine batters in his longest outing of the year.
RHP David Fischer retired the first two Tortugas of the game, before walking Nick Senzel on four pitches and Gavin LaValley on five. He then hit Reydel Medina on the elbow to load up the bases, and plunked Blake Butler to force in the first run of the night. Alfredo Rodriguez followed with Daytona's first hit, a two run double down the left field line. He was hitless in his previous 15 at-bats. Chadwick Tromp singled in two runs a batter later with a base hit to center field.
Gutierrez retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, before running into some trouble in the fourth inning. With two outs, Zander Weil doubled over Medina's head in right field. He scored a batter later on a Shane Kennedy double to center. Tuesday's hero, Brian Navarreto, then drove him in with a base hit laced to center. Gutierrez would get Nelson Molina to fly out to center, leaving the tying run at the plate.
Gutierrez then retired the final 10 batters he faced. RHP Robert Stock came on in the eighth and worked around a two-out hit batter.
Leading, 5-2, in the ninth, the Tortugas turned to RHP Sarkis Ohanian to lock down his first save. Ohanian followed through by striking out the side for the second time in the series.
Gutierrez (2-2) allowed two runs and five hits in his seven innings, while striking out nine and no walking a man. He has won back-to-back starts. Fischer (2-1) had his toughest start of the year, allowing five runs in a season-low four innings, while his season ERA nearly tripled.
The Tortugas conclude heir 10-game road trip Thursday in Fort Myers. RHP Jesus Reyes (2-0, 3.47) gets the ball for Daytona against RHP Keaton Steele (0-3, 8.10). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:15 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
