Hens offense stymied in Louisville opener Jun 10th 2017, 01:19, by Lucas Rains
The Toledo Mud Hens were limited to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Louisville Bats on Friday night. With the loss, the Hens fall to 8-10 on the season against the Bats.
It was a pitchers' duel in Game 1 of the series in Louisville as both pitching staffs were on top of their games. Toledo sent spot starter Blaine Hardy to the hill, who responded well with 3.0 shutout innings, allowing four hits, and struck out three.
Robert Stephenson started for the Bats and despite walking five batters, allowed just one hit and struck out six in his five innings of scoreless baseball.
The Hens had traffic on the basepaths early when Stephenson struggled to gain control. Two walks in the first and three in the second loaded the bases for Toledo even though they didn't reach base on a hit. Stephenson tight-roped out of danger in each inning to keep the game scoreless at the time.
The Bats broke open into the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after Hardy exited for Dustin Molleken . Stuart Turner started the inning with a base hit and Sebastian Elizalde doubled him home as Louisville took a 1-0 lead.
JaCoby Jones recorded the Hens first hit in the top of the fifth when he doubled to left, but Stephenson flew out to end the inning and the threat.
Toledo put two men on against Lisalverto Bonilla of Louisville when he walked Efren Navarro and Omar Infante, but he recorded the next two outs to keep the Hens off the board.
In Logan Kensing 's second inning of work in the bottom of the seventh, the Bats loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks. Kensing was able to evade the threat when induced a double play off the bat of Turner to end the inning and keep the deficit at 1-0.
Louis Coleman entered the game for Louisville and immediately allowed the Hens' second hit on a line drive single off the bat of Jason Krizan . Navarro put two men on when he singled with one out. Coleman got the next two Hens' batters to end the inning.
The Bats added an insurance run in the eighth against Kyle Ryan when Philip Ervin doubled homoe Rob Brantly . After eight, Louisville led 2-0.
The Hens went down in order in the ninth to drop the first game of the series by a final of 2-0.
The Hens will play Game 2 of the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
