Henegar's Hat Trick Helps Wings Earn Point in Shootout
December 18, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- Scott Henegar tallied a hat trick, and Kalamazoo Wings fans donated over 1,000 stuffed animals for kids in the community at the annual Teddy Bear Toss, but the Wings were unable to stop the timely scoring of the Quad City Mallards during a 5-4 shootout loss on Sunday at Wings Event Center.
Dominating the possession and shots on goal in the first period, the Kalamazoo Wings hurried out of the opening puck drop with a high-octane pace. The Wings were rewarded in the first 2:16 of the game as Henegar crashed the net and swept home a rebound that was left after a shot from Kyle Bushee was initially stopped.
Later on in the period and with time just expiring on their second power play try of the game, Kalamazoo continued peppering Mallards' goalie Adam Vay, and cashed in with their second of the game. Bushee flicked a backhander to the goal which was tipped into the net by Peter Schneider for his fourth of the season.
Not going away quietly, Quad City used their first power play try of the game to get on the board. Alex Petan snuck into an un-marked area of the Wings' penalty kill and one-timed a Justin Kovacs pass into the goal.
Later in the frame, Kalamazoo jolted back into the lead after an offensive-zone faceoff win. Tyler Biggs drew the faceoff back to Henegar, who zipped the shot into the upper corner of the goal. It established a 3-1 lead for Kalamazoo with under four minutes remaining in the second period.
Before the period came to a close, the Mallards drew to within one with a last-minute tally. Michael Parks used his speed to carry into the Wings' zone along the left side, and then lifted a backhand over the shoulder of Joel Martin and into the goal.
Entering the third period and trialing by a goal, the Mallards dialed up a crisp passing play that freed Petan in front of the goal for his second of the night. His quick wrist shot snuck past Martin after receiving a pass from Sam Warning.
Four minutes later and while killing a penalty, Kalamazoo stormed back to take the lead as Henegar capped off his hat trick. Henegar knocked the puck past a Quad City defenseman and waltzed in towards Vay, sneaking the puck over his left leg to give Kalamazoo the 4-3 advantage.
With less than three minutes remaining in the period, Quad City pulled even again as Parks danced his way along the left wing side, and drove towards the goal, rolling the puck through the legs of Martin. The goal tied the game at four and sent it into an overtime session.
Kalamazoo outshot Quad City, 3-0, and had a power play attempt, but the overtime session didn't produce a winner and the game entered a shootout. Kovacs scored in the first round for the Mallards, and Vay denied all three Wings' shooters, as the Mallards earned the extra point and the 5-4 win.
