December 18, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Alex Petan and Michael Parks both scored twice in regulation and Justin Kovacs scored the only goal of the shootout as the Quad City Mallards (15-8-2) overcame Scott Henegar's hat trick and rallied to defeat the host Kalamazoo Wings (10-15-3) 5-4 in a shootout Sunday.
Mallard goaltender Adam Vay- who made 29 saves in regulation in overtime- stopped all three Wings after Kovacs scored in the first round of the shootout. The Mallards only reached the shootout after surviving a Kalamazoo power play in overtime.
The Mallards, who spent most of the day battling from behind, forced sudden death when Parks walked in alone to tie the score at four with just two minutes and twenty-five seconds left in regulation. That goal was the Mallards' second third period equalizer. Petan evened the score at three at 3:42 of the third by burying Sam Warning's centering pass only for Henegar to race up the left wing and rifle in his third goal- shorthanded- at 7:19.
The Wings had twice built two goal leads earlier in the game but the Mallards in the second period twice battled back to narrow the Kalamazoo advantage to a single goal. The Mallards were on the power play when Petan cut the gap to 2-1 from the slot at 5:26 of the second period. After Henegar scored his second from the right wing circle at 16:03 of the second the Mallards responded once more, this time with a rising backhander from Parks with just 48 seconds left in the middle frame.
Henegar scored the opener from the doorstep just two minutes and 16 seconds into the game. Peter Schneider's tip-in widened the Kalamazoo lead to 2-0 at the 17-minute mark of the first period, but the Mallards would recover from their slow start.
The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night against the Fort Wayne Komets. That game and a ll Mallards Wednesday night home games this season face off at the special early start time of 6:35.
