D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, DC (October 4, 2004) - D.C. United D Ezra Hendrickson was again named to the roster of St. Vincent and the Grenadines's national team as they continue their qualifying matches for World Cup 2006. Hendrickson departed directly from New York following United's second road win of the season to join the national side in training camp. He is scheduled to rejoin the Black-and-Red on Thursday, Oct. 14th.
"Ezra has been terrific for United while fulfilling all of his national team commitments," said Dave Kasper, D.C. United Technical Director. "We appreciate his professionalism and outstanding play and we wish him the best of luck."
Vincy Heat, as the team is affectionately known, will make up their previously postponed match against Mexico on Oct. 6th in Pachuca, Mexico, before hosting a return leg in Kingstown on Oct. 9th. A visit to St. Kitts and Nevis on Oct. 13th will wrap up this segment of qualifiers. St. Vincent currently sits level with Mexico at three points, in second place in Group 3. Trinidad and Tobago currently head up the group, with six points from three matches.
Despite a new coach for the St. Vincent and The Grenadines side - Yugoslav Zoran Vranes replaced Adrian Shaw - Hendrickson will likely retain the captain's armband for this match. Hendrickson was instrumental in leading the side to a 6-3 aggregate win over Nicaragua, advancing St. Vincent and The Grenadines to the semi-final rounds of CONCACAF World Cup 2006 qualifying. He has earned 52 caps for his country, including the side's recent 1-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis.
He struck net early in his tenure with the Black-and-Red, nodding home a goal against Nottingham Forest on July 14th. In his 11 League appearances, eight of which have been starts, he has yet to tally a goal, but has added needed depth to the United defensive line and a spark to the attack. He was particularly effective in marshaling the backline in Saturday's match against the MetroStars, preserving a 1-0 win for United.
The lanky 6'3" defender was drafted by the MetroStars in 1997 and made eight appearances before a trade sent him to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Over the next seven years, he appeared in 145 matches for the Galaxy - including a start in MLS Cup 2002 - tallying 17 goals and adding 26 assists. A July 2003 trade sent Hendrickson to the Dallas Burn, where he made 16 appearances (15 starts), picking up a goal and an assist.
