Henderson's Walk Off Single Completes Five-Run Comeback
July 21, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals came back all the way from an early 5-0 deficit to take game one of a day-night doubleheader with the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-5. After getting the Jackals rally started with his first home run of the season earlier in the game, Chris Henderson was the hero in this one, smacking an RBI single up the middle of the field to seal the Jackals victory in the bottom of the tenth inning.
After Steve Fox allowed five runs over his first two innings of work, his Jackals teammates set out to mount a comeback. In the third inning, Henderson began the Jackals comeback quest with his aforementioned solo shot to right. In the next frame, right fielder Carlos Guzman extended his eight-game hitting streak with an RBI single. First baseman Francisco Caraballo cut the lead to one with his 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth. He then tied the game with an RBI single in the seventh. That set up Henderson's game-winning single in the 10th, the second walk-off win of the season for the Jackals.
Leading the way for the RailCats was the top third of their lineup. Leadoff man Adam Klein went 2-3 with a run scored and his 46th walk of the season, easily best in the American Association and Can-Am Leagues. Fellow outfielder Mike Massaro went 1-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a triple, his tenth on the season, also easily best in the American Association and Can-Am Leagues. Rounding out the top third of the lineup - and the outfield - was Mike Coles, who went 2-3 on the day with an RBI and a walk. Catcher Ryan Babineau chipped in with a two-run double of his own.
Fox, who entered the game 8-1 with a 2.41 ERA, walked the first two batters he faced before allowing three runs in the first. The RailCats would add two more in the next inning. Fox did have seven strikeouts on the day amidst allowing eight hits. He earns his second straight no-decision,
Getting the victory for the Jackals was lefty Jeff Gogal, who moves to 5-1 on the year. He pitched a scoreless three innings. Marco Gonzalez suffers the loss for the RailCats. He is now 2-2 on the year.
Lefty Stephen Hiscock was making his second start since coming off the disabled list for the Gary SouthShore RailCats, and he was effective. Hiscock did allow two home runs to the power-hitting Jackals, but he only allowed four additional hits. He also earns a no-decision.
The game was scheduled to be only seven innings long due to the Can-Am's doubleheader rules.
In the nightcap, southpaw Dustin Birosak (1-1, 4.87) makes his second start of the season for the Jackals. Jon Gulbransen (0-0, 1.04) makes the third start of his RailCat career. First pitch is scheduled for thirty-minutes following the conclusion of game one with pregame slated for ten-minutes prior.
