Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have signed wingers Colin and Brett Hemingway to one-year contracts for the 2009-10 ECHL season.
Colin, who will be entering his seventh professional season at the age of 29, led the Aces in goals, power play goals, and points last year, finishing with 25 goals, 42 assists, 67 points, and a +8 rating. He followed that up with 25 points (9g-16a) in 21 playoff games, second only to teammate Josh Soares (who has signed to play in Europe next season) among ECHL playoff scorers, and tied for the team lead with a +12 rating.
Colin Hemingway scored a pair of game-winning goals in the Kelly Cup Finals against South Carolina, snapping a 1-1 tie with 12 minutes left in Game 2 and beating the Stingrays at 17:22 of overtime in Game 5, sending the series back to Anchorage. He also enjoyed a five-point night in a win over Victoria in Game 2 of the National Conference semi-finals.
Brett Hemingway, an ECHL All-Star in 2008, fought off a series of nagging injuries to place sixth on the team in scoring with 42 points (10g-32a) in 58 games last season, his second with the Aces. He added two assists in seven playoff games. Once healthy, Brett Hemingway (who will turn 26 at the end of this month) actually led the team in scoring over the final 30 games of the regular season, finishing with 26 points (7g-19a) over that span.
The brothers, who grew up in Surrey, B.C., both attended the University of New Hampshire, but their college careers did not overlap. Colin led the Wildcats to Frozen Fours in 2002 and 2003 after being drafted by St. Louis in the eighth round in 1999, while Brett arrived in the fall of 2003 (Colin's rookie season in the pros) after being drafted in the seventh round by Colorado and scored 41 goals over his sophomore and junior seasons to help UNH reach the Elite Eight in back-to-back years. Colin Hemingway, who racked up 113 points (55g-58a) over his final two collegiate campaigns, enjoyed a three-game stint in the NHL with the Blues during the 2005-06 season, when he also suited up in five regular season games with the eventual Kelly Cup champion Aces.
Alaska opens its regular season at home against Victoria Oct. 16, 17 and 19, with all three games scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start. Pre-season games against Kalamazoo at Sullivan Arena have been scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8 at 7:15 p.m. For those interested in season tickets or corporate sponsorship information, regular office hours at the corner of 15th and Gambell are Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
