STOCKTON, CALIF. - The Stockton Heat, proud AHL affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames, are set to kick off the second year of the team's Get in the Game. READ! program with the Office of Mayor Tubbs and the Stockton Unified School District tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Hamilton Elementary School located at 2245 11th St. in Stockton.

Media who'd like to attend tomorrow's kickoff event at Hamilton Elementary Library can alert Brandon Kisker, Heat Director of Communications & New Media by emailing him at bkisker@stocktonheat.com or calling 209-373-1524. In attendance tomorrow will be students of Hamilton Elementary, Mayor Tubbs' wife Anna Nti-Asare-Tubbs, SUSD Superintendent John Deasy, Heat CEO Brian Petrovek, Heat players Josh Healey and Andrew Mangiapane and Frankie the Firebird!

"We're really excited to continue promoting literacy to our local second grade students at five SUSD schools," Heat CEO Brian Petrovek said. "This initiative is important for us to champion in the community as we continue our commitment to the city and local elementary school students. It was rewarding to us to see how our players embraced the program and engaged with the students, sharing their love of reading, and it will continue to be so in year two!"

Last year the challenge was issued by Mayor Tubbs and the Stockton Heat to five SUSD schools, Taft, Van Buren, Monroe, Hamilton and Fremont-Lopez Elementary School, to expand their passion for reading. The Heat helped ignite the passion by sending 20 Heat hockey players to visit and read to classrooms and local libraries on 65 occasions throughout the 2017-18 season.

"I am incredibly proud of the Heat organization for supporting our young people and encouraging them to read," Mayor Tubbs said. "Literacy is incredibly important as first you learn to read and then you read to learn. Last year our students really stepped up and met our reading challenge. This year I know they will do even better."

The schools combined to read 15,338 books, and as a reward, every participant was invited out to the final home game of the Heat's 2017-18 season and were recognized for their achievement. The Reading Faceoff champions, Fremont-Lopez Elementary, which read 5,618 books, were also presented a championship banner to hang in their school.

"Stockton Unified School District is extremely grateful for our relationship with the Stockton Heat and was overly impressed with the Heat players and their ability to impact reading interest last year in our five schools," SUSD Superintendent John Deasy said. "We have high expectations for the second year of the Get in the Game. Read! program and we know that this initiative will continue to impact our student's bright young minds."
