Heard Boosts Fighters' Offense
Winning two state titles for Guyer High School and playing five seasons in a burnt orange uniform, Jerrod Heard's name rings familiar in the Lone Star State. Now with the Fighters, he's applying his athleticism in a more condensed space.
"I knew that I could be a key for this team," Heard said, reflecting on why he signed with the Frisco Fighters. "I really try to perfect everything."
As an indoor passer, Heard has refined the timing and accuracy of his deliveries, learning to trust his eyes. He values the chance to play in front of the same fans who have kept tabs on him from an early age, and he wants to pay them back for their support.
"Not a lot of people get that opportunity, to stay in Texas and play in front of your people," said Heard.
On Frisco's depth chart at quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back, Heard can do it all. His versatility was fostered in high school, and it's carried over into his time in the IFL.
"It was basically one of those things where the best player had to play quarterback at my high school," he said. "I essentially did everything."
As a senior at Guyer High School, Heard's do-everything talent earned him the nation's No. 2 quarterback prospect ranking by Scout.com. Heard started his career at the University of Texas playing quarterback before making the transition to wider receiver.
At this point in his career, Heard isn't always sitting in the quarterback meeting room. He stands in wherever help is needed, improvising along the way.
"More than being a backup quarterback, my job is just filling in spots that help us with the games, knowing different things, and having that extra body for each position," he said.
This past weekend, Heard harnessed his versatility and made the most of an increased workload against the Massachusetts Pirates. In a Player of the Game performance, he passed for 52 yards and rushed for another 58 yards. He found the endzone twice, helping the Fighters to a 40-33 road victory.
