Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - Cedar Rapids Kernels lefthander Brent Headrick struck out a season-high 10 batters and tied a career-best with 6.0 scoreless innings of one-hit, one-walk baseball as he, Orlando Rodriguez and Andrew Cabezas combined for a one-hit shutout of the Quad Cities River Bandits on Wednesday evening. The shutout is the Kernels' fourth of 2022 as they snapped a four-game losing skid to remain two full games up in the West Division.
Headrick carved up Quad Cities to earn his third win of the season, generating 20 whiffs on 79 pitches. He threw 53 for strikes and became the first Kernels starter to pitch into the sixth inning this season, carrying a no-hitter into his final frame.
The Kernels picked their starter up in the sixth as Kennie Taylor reached on an error and later scored on a Christian Encarnacion-Strand single lined into left-center. Cedar Rapids added three more in the seventh, first by way of Alerick Soularie reaching on a fielder's choice then stealing second, advancing to third on a single then scoring on a wild pitch. Taylor and Jeferson Morales drew back-to-back walks to bring Anthony Prato to the plate, then the Kernels left fielder blasted a two-run triple to the warning track in center to make it 4-0.
Orlando Rodriguez fanned the side in the seventh and retired all six he faced over 2.0 scoreless to pick up a hold in his Kernels debut, then Andrew Cabezas slammed the door by punching out two in a 1-2-3 ninth.
Game three is set for Thursday with a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
