Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - After eight seasons of hosting both collegiate and minor-league baseball, the playing surface at Haymarket Park is receiving its first major facelift this fall. The ballpark is in the process of installing a brand-new grass playing surface, replacing the turf that has seen eight years of Lincoln Saltdogs games and seven years of Nebraska baseball, as well as several high school state tournament games.

Haymarket Park Athletic Turf Manager Josh Klute says the entire process should take about two weeks. "The old sod should all be removed by the end of the day Wednesday, and we'll have the sand tilled and the laser grading complete by the end of the week," he said. "All of next week will be dedicated to laying the new sod. We're pretty close to being right on schedule, as it stands now."

In addition to the new sod, some work will be done on the field's warning track to improve water drainage, especially in foul territory near both dugouts. The Nebraska baseball team, which would normally be holding fall practice on the field this week, is working out this fall at Sherman Field instead. The Huskers are tentatively scheduled to christen the new playing surface with a game in early March, while the Saltdogs' 2009 home schedule is expected to open in mid-May.

The playing surface at Haymarket Park has been one of the most honored in all of baseball, earning the "Best Playing Field" award in each of its eight seasons as the home of the Saltdogs. Haymarket Park claimed the award from 2001 to 2005 in the Northern League, and has also won the honor in each of its first three seasons as a member of the American Association.
