South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks and West Michigan Whitecaps will remain tied for sixth place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division standings after splitting a doubleheader on Tuesday night. South Bend took game one 6-1 before being shut out 5-0 in the nightcap at Fifth Third Ballpark.
In game one, J.R. Bradley (WP, 1-5) finally posted his first victory of the season, tossing 6.0 innings of one-run ball. The right hander from West Virginia allowed eight hits but no walks, striking out three and being aided by two double plays to limit the Whitecaps on the bases.
Bradley was helped by the long ball, as the Silver Hawks blasted two homers in a game for the fourth time this season. Bobby Stone had a solo shot in the fourth inning to give the Silver Hawks a 2-0 lead. Yazy Arbelo then added a three run shot in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-1. Arbelo's blast was his league leading ninth of the season and pushed his RBI total to 28 - also a league best.
Matt Helm had two hits and a RBI for South Bend in game one while Ender Inciarte also added three hits and two runs scored as the Silver Hawks won their fifth straight.
Game two was a different story, with the Silver Hawks being shut out for the fourth time this season. Jeff Ferrell (WP, 2-1) came off the DL to pitch 5.0 scoreless innings and Patrick Cooper (ND) completed the shutout with two perfect innings of relief.
Dan Taylor (LP, 2-2) got the start in game two for South Bend, pitching in front of over 100 family and friends from his hometown in nearby Jenison, Michigan. The lefty was solid through 4.0 innings, allowing just one run in the first on a Hernan Perez homer. Taylor ran out of steam in the fifth, allowing the first four hitters to reach and score as the Whitecaps put the game out of reach.
The lone offensive highlight in game two for South Bend was Raywilly Gomez with two hits, extending his hitting streak to a personal season high of five. The switch hitting catcher is now batting .317 on the season.
Game three of the four game series is a morning affair on Wednesday with an 11:00 AM Eastern Time first pitch. LHP David Holmberg (1-3, 5.06 ERA) will start for the Silver Hawks against West Michigan's RHP Josue Carreno (1-3, 6.17 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 10:40 AM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
