July 8, 2005 - BOISE, ID - Boise Hawks pitcher Mitch Atkins spent Friday morning reading to kids and signing autographs at the Primary Colors Learning Center in Meridian. Approximately 20 children ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old listened to the Greensboro, NC native read a baseball story. The kids then got a quick tutorial on pitching.
Atkins is currently 5-2 with a 5.14 ERA. He'll be making his 4th start of the season tomorrow night in Yakima. In 14 innings pitched this summer, the righty has given up 8 earned runs while recording 8 strikeouts. This is his second year in the Cubs organization. He was drafted in the 7th Round of the 2004 Draft. He spent last season with the Mesa Cubs, compiling a 2-2 mark with a 7.69 ERA in 29.2 innings.
