USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Outshine Stars in Lincoln

April 1, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A wild sequence during the closing minutes of regulation was not enough to deny the Waterloo Black Hawks a 5-4 road win against the Lincoln Stars Friday at the Ice Box.

Waterloo seemingly put the game out of each with 2:11 left to go. During a four-on-three power play, Jake Ryczek blasted a shot into the net from the left circle, boosting the visitors to a 5-2 lead.

However, the Stars scored twice in a ten second span at 18:18 and 18:28. Both goals came from Grant Jozefek during four-on-four time. Ludvig Hoff made the setup each time, with Jozefek first cutting across the netmouth from his right to left, then going the opposite direction for a similar follow up.

Garrett Metcalf kept everything else out during the waning moments, making 20 saves during the decision.

Both teams had fruitless power plays before Liam Pecararo dented the net at even strength for the only goal of the first period. Coming off the left boards after taking a pass from Ronnie Hein, Pecararo squeaked a shot past Peyton Jones at 10:50.

High-quality scoring chances led to Black Hawks goals in the first and last minute of the second period. At the 37 second mark, all three Waterloo forwards touched the puck on a rush, finished by Sam McCormick, cutting across the top of the crease to lift in a backhander. Then with 19.6 seconds left before intermission, Shane Bowers capitalized from close range after a turnover. In between, Tanner Laczynski dented the net, knocking in a centering pass from Anthony Wyse at 3:53.

In the opening minute of the third, Laczynski brought the Stars within one goal, poking in a centering feed from Michael Gillespie. However, Waterloo spent much of the period ahead by two, thanks to a one-timer by McCormick just after a power play had ended at 3:37. Ryan Lohin assisted; it was one of three helpers he was credited with during the matchup.

Friday's game marked the final time the Black Hawks will stray from Young Arena during the 2015/16 regular season schedule. Waterloo returns home Saturday to open a three-game, season-ending home stand against the Sioux City Musketeers. Tickets for the 7:05 game are still available from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680.
