Halladay Shuts Out Steel Friday
April 1, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Logan Halladay stopped all 30 shots from the Chicago Steel (22-26-4-3, 51 points) to lead the Bloomington Thunder (36-18-3-1, 76 points) to a 1-0 victory Friday at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Ethan Somoza scored the only goal of the game. The Thunder have now won 12 of their last 13 games.
Chicago and Bloomington battled through a scoreless first period. The Thunder dominated the first eight minutes of the game, but Chicago then went on a 12-0 run in shots on goal, thanks in part to two unsuccessful power play opportunities.
Somoza broke the scoreless tie early in the second period. The Thunder forward charged up ice in a two-on-one rush and snapped a blistering shot over the glove of Steel netminder John Lethemon at 2:41. Bloomington outshot Chicago 14-8 in the frame, carrying a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
Known for its hustle and gritty play, Bloomington limited Chicago's opportunities in the third period, allowing the Thunder to hold on for an important win as they battle for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference.
Chicago continues its home three-in-three weekend on Saturday when the Steel host the Des Moines Buccaneers on First Responders Night at 7:00 p.m. The weekend then wraps up on Sunday, April 3 with a 3 p.m. faceoff against the Omaha Lancers. Sunday's matinee is a Steel Family Pack game, where fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas (or waters) and four chuck-a-pucks starting at just $59. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 855-51-STEEL, stop by the Box Office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
