 Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Have Another Big Night

April 6, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Fourteen Waterloo players recorded a point Saturday, and the Black Hawks matched their highest scoring night of the season with an 8-1 outburst at Young Arena against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The wide-margin win followed a 7-1 victory over the Omaha Lancers on Friday. Saturday's performance was the fourth time since the beginning of March that the Hawks have scored seven goals in a game. However, the last time Waterloo made it to eight was on November 4th during an 8-2 tilt with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

A marvelous special teams period sent the Hawks to a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Just 2:50 into the game and only seconds into a power play, Waterloo took a 1-0 lead. Grady Deering fed a pass from the side of the net to Griffin Erdman at the left hashmark; James Norton got a piece of Erdman's shot, but couldn't keep it out.

Waterloo killed a Cedar Rapids power play, then scored the only even-strength goal of the frame. Reid Morich had forced a turnover in the Cedar Rapids zone; 20 seconds later, he came from behind the RoughRider net to redirect Michael Phelan's shot-pass from an impossible angle. The tip bounced off Norton and in at 12:26.

Calvin Vachon's best save of the period came on Amine Hajibi with four minutes to go during a second fruitless RoughRiders advantage. Then Tyler Miller added another Black Hawks power play goal at 18:49, snapping a quick shot from the slot past Norton's glove.

The Hawks added two more even-strength goals in the second. Gavin Lindberg found Myles Hilman with a feed near the bottom of the right circle at 8:07. The Hawks' captain squeezed his shot inside the post at Norton's right. Lindberg also set up the other goal in the period at 15:23. On a two-on-one rush with Gavyn Thoreson, Lindberg put a pass toward the top of the crease, and Thoreson banged it in.

For the second consecutive night, a visiting goal early in the third period represented the only shot to beat Vachon. Joel Kjellberg produced the lone RoughRider tally on a give-and-go passing play with Landon Resendes at 1:50. Kjellberg received the return feed and fired in his shot from the right circle. Vachon went on to finish the game with 28 saves.

Hilman reestablished the five-goal margin less than two minutes later. He swiped the puck near the Waterloo blue line and made it up the rink with a defender in hot pursuit, scoring on a low attempt from between the circles.

Eero Butella struck for the next Hawks tally at 6:25 off a faceoff. Butella stepped behind the RoughRider center to collect the puck and flip it in with one quick motion.

The Hawks' third power play goal of the evening capped the scoring at 9:03. Erdman hit the net with a long try under the crossbar. It was his third goal of the weekend, all in power play situations.

Saturday was the 60th game on the schedule. There are two games remaining: next weekend, the Hawks visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday, then host the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday. The final regular season contest is Fan Appreciation Night. Next Generation Wireless will throw hundreds of t-shirts into the crowd at intermission.
