Hawks Fall in Fargo

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Two goals in the third period by the Fargo Force undid the Waterloo Black Hawks' aspirations to extend the USHL Western Conference Final series and gave Fargo a 3-2 win at Scheels Arena Saturday.

The result gave the Force the best-of-five series in four games.

The final period began with the Hawks on top 2-1, but Calvin Pokorny's shot from the top of the right circle pin-balled to the netmouth and was last touched by Garrett Van Wyhe on its way in at 5:01. John Schuldt recorded the game-winner five-and-a-half minutes later on a blast from the high slot which handcuffed Matej Tomek, deflecting up to the back bar of the net.

After putting 25 shots on net in the second period, the Hawks could only manage five in the third. Strauss Mann stopped them all, making 35 saves for the win.

The Hawks had scored first, but their opening period lead lasted just over three minutes. Solag Bakich won a faceoff in the left wing circle, then deflected Michael Ferrandino's resulting shot past Mann. Fargo answered at 7:17; Griffin Loughran was able to steer past Tomek's attempted poke check and then flip a shot to the top corner.

Waterloo seized the lead again at 13:36 of the second period. The Hawks had 12 seconds of five-on-three power play time but only needed half of it. The puck came to Ben Finkelstein in the high slot following a faceoff win, and he drilled his shot under the crossbar for a go-ahead score which kept the visitors in front through intermission.

The Waterloo loss brings the Black Hawks' postseason run to an end. During the 2017/18 regular season, the Hawks claimed their third Anderson Cup title for having the USHL's best record. The organization immediately turns its attention to the 2018/19 campaign with Phase I of the league draft on Monday evening.
