Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-On Tuesday, National Hockey League Central Scouting released its final ranking of players eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft, and Waterloo Black Hawks defensemen Brandon Montour and Mark Friedman were both moving up the list.
January's midterm roll of North American prospects included Montour at #186, but Tuesday's final edition placed him 92nd. Friedman gained nine spots, from 133rd in the earlier rankings to 124th at the end of the regular season. Forward Tyler Sheehy was also marked as a draft candidate; the Burnsville, Minnesota native charted at #200.
Montour was named the United States Hockey League's Defenseman of the Week six times, including the USHL's final weekly honor of the season on Monday. The Oshweken, Ontario native led all league blue-liners with 62 points, including 14 goals and 48 assists. Recording at least one point per game from December 13th through February 9th, Montour's 18-game streak was the longest of its kind by any player at any position in the USHL during 2013/14. He is committed to the University of Massachusetts.
Friedman missed nine games due to illness, but in 51 appearances this season, he recorded more points than during 64 games in 2012/13 (40 compared to 35). Adding ten goals to 30 assists, the Toronto native finished fourth in scoring among USHL defensemen. With a +22 plus/minus differential during each of his two years in Waterloo, the Bowling Green recruit has a cumulative +44 mark in USHL regular season play.
Joining the Hawks in early November, Sheehy appeared in just 49 games, but tied for fifth in team scoring with 49 points. Among his 21 goals, Sheehy contributed four game-winners, including a decisive score on March 30th against the Green Bay Gamblers. That goal was one of two scored shorthanded, on top of another six power play markers. After completing his junior career, Sheehy will attend the University of Minnesota.
NHL teams will make their draft selections during the June event in Philadelphia. Approximately 210 players will be chosen during the seven-round process. Last summer, six players with ties to the Black Hawks organization were selected during the NHL Draft.
