 Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Defeated in Dubuque

April 12, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo Black Hawks penalty killers turned away six of eight Dubuque Fighting Saints power plays, but ultimately the visitors couldn't keep up during a 6-3 Friday loss at ImOn Arena.

Despite the amount of time Waterloo spent shorthanded, the Hawks still outshot their hosts 29-23. Dubuque goalie Kevin Reidler made 26 saves.

Waterloo still remains within a point of the second playoff bye in the Western Conference going to the final day of the USHL schedule. Second place Sioux City also lost Friday, falling to the Lincoln Stars 2-1.

The Hawks were turned away on a power play in the early minutes, then stopped the Fighting Saints during a two-minute advantage. However, seconds after Waterloo came back to full strength, Beckett Hendrickson won a puck on the right wing boards, setting up a passing sequence which led to a tap-in goal by Noah Powell at 5:33.

Dubuque scored again at 9:07. Juraj Pekarcik sped to the offensive zone, hooking a pass to a trailing Erik Pahlsson for a low shot past Calvin Vachon.

Despite not scoring during a five-minute second power play, the Saints did extend the lead with a subsequent advantage; Powell banged in his second of the night from close range at 10:26. Thirty seconds after that, Dubuque struck again as defenseman Matthew Desiderio jumped into a rush and hit the net from the left circle.

Gavin Lindberg drew a goal back at 13:14. Positioned near the side of the net, he was in the right spot to flip in the rebound of Dylan Compton's attempt from the high slot.

Powell completed his hat trick during a five-on-three power play at 15:37, lifting in a second chance after the initial try by Pekarcik.

The Hawks limited the damage from the period, thanks to a goal by John Mustard with 1:27 left before intermission. Quick passing set up Mustard, leaning into a shot from the right circle.

The 5-2 score held until late in the third period. With the Hawks on a power play - plus an extra attacker - Gavyn Thoreson squeezed in a chance from below the right faceoff dot with 2:16 remaining.

However, Pahlsson notched an empty netter with 14.5 seconds to go, pushing the final margin back to three.

The final game of the 2023/24 regular season is at Young Arena on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. It's Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Next Generation Wireless, including hundreds of free t-shirts which will be thrown into the crowd at intermission. The first 500 fans to the rink will also receive a copy of the 2023/24 team photo. Tickets are moving quickly for the game but are still available by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visiting tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
