Boise Hawks News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Paul Hoilman hit his league-leading 11th home run of the season, and three pitchers combined to not allow an earned run, as the Boise Hawks won their second straight victory, topping the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 3-2, before 3,065 fans at Memorial Stadium.

After a two-out walk in the first to Rafael Lopez, Hoilman hit the first pitch he saw from Lorenzo Mendoza over the center field wall to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. S-K cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, as Dan Burkhart scored on a Boise error, but Lopez gave the Hawks an insurance with an RBI single in the eighth, plating Pin-Chieh Chen, to make it 3-1.

They would need the run, as the Volcanoes would load the bases in the ninth and plate Brett Krill on a passed ball, however Bryce Shafer struck out Burkhart and got Garrett Buechele to fly out to pick up his eighth save of the year.

Ben Wells went five strong innings, allowing an unearned run and five hits to pick up his third win - recording 10 ground ball outs along the way. Kyler Burke was stellar out of the pen, retiring 10 of the first 11 men he faced, striking out five. Lopez went 2-for-3 in the victory for the Hawks.

Mendoza went six innings in the loss for S-K, striking out six. Krill and Chuckie Jones each had two hits in the loss for the Volcanoes.

Game 3 of the series is tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. with Yao-Lin Wang meeting Cameron Lamb.
