Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Four Portland skaters logged multiple points and Jan Špunar turned aside 31 of 33 shots as the Winterhawks (39-17-4-3) rolled past the Spokane Chiefs (14-40-4-5) by a 6-2 final on Tuesday.
Portland's onslaught began just 38 seconds in as Luca Cagnoni netted his first of the game with a long-range shot that squeaked through Cooper Michaluk. Spokane responded with a Berkly Catton goal midway through the frame, but the Hawks continued to pour on the pressure with three more goals in the final eight minutes of the frame. Luke Schelter first restored the lead, firing a seam pass to the back door that deflected in. Marcus Nguyen extended it soon after as he polished off a beautiful setup from Jack O'Brien, and Cagnoni put a bow on a sterling period as he tucked in a rebound from his own initial shot.
The Winterhawks tacked on two more in the second period to push their lead to five at the end of forty minutes. Both came on the power play - James Stefan rifled home the first with a one-timer from the left circle at 9:17, and Josh Zakreski netted his 10th of the year with a deflection of Marek Alscher's shot at 17:32.
The contest turned testy in the third with both teams upping the physicality, and a late Cameron Parr tally from the Chiefs cut the deficit to four, but the Hawks held strong for the victory.
Portland's next contest comes Friday as the team kicks off a home-and-home with the Seattle Thunderbirds at accesso ShoWare Center before returning home for Oregon Hockey History Night at the VMC on Saturday.
