Hawks Caught in Sioux City Surge
The Sioux City Musketeers did all of their scoring in the final nine minutes of Saturday's game, edging the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-3 at Tyson Event Center.
A four-on-four sequence evolved into a Musketeer power play, leading to the first Sioux City goal at 11:44 of the third. Kirklan Irey put back the rebound of Justin Hryckowian's shot from a sharp angle, beginning the sequence which would erase the Hawks' three-goal lead.
Later, Hryckowian was stationed at the front of the net to record Sioux City's next score at 16:23, deflecting Griffin Ludtke's attempt from the left point. Just over a minute after that, Bennett Schimek tied it, scoring into an open side when Nikita Krivokrasov gave a head fake, then slipped a pass from circle to circle.
Brian Carrabes produced the game-winner at 18:02, getting behind the Waterloo defense and cutting across the face of the goal to push the puck past Jack Williams as the two came together.
Sioux City outshot the Hawks 14-4 in the third period after the two teams had a nearly even number of chances in the first 40 minutes.
While Sioux City's comeback started with a power play goal, the Hawks built their initial lead moments after a successful first period penalty kill. Luke Bast came out of the penalty box near the 7:45 mark to find the puck waiting for him, and eventually finished Waterloo's chance after a back-and-forth rush with Owen Ozar.
The Hawks added two second period goals, the first from Max Sasson on a partial breakaway at 9:47. Then at 18:15, Zane Demsey jumped into a rush, receiving a feed from Sasson to score on a low shot from the high slot.
After splitting two weekend games versus the Musketeers, the Hawks remain on the road Sunday to visit the Tri-City Storm at 4:05 p.m.
