
Havoc Wraps Up Playoff Spot

HUNTSVILLE, AL - A three-point weekend helped the Huntsville Havoc wrap up a berth in the SPHL Playoffs. The Havoc dropped a 5-4 decision to the Mississippi Surge in a shootout on Friday before rallying from down 4-0 to beat the Knoxville Ice Bears 7-6 in overtime on Saturday.
Friday, March 5 - Mississippi 5, Huntsville 4 - SO
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc fell 5-4 to the Mississippi Surge Friday night in overtime but picked up a point clinching a playoff spot.
The line of Travis Kauffeldt, Justin Rohr and newcomer Brett Liscomb all scored a goal each and had two assists. Nick Monroe netted the fourth goal to tie the game at 4-4 in the third period.
Chris Ferazzoli had two goals for the Surge while Tim Velemirovich and Jeff Grant both had one. Matthew Larke scored the game winner in the shootout.
Bill Zaniboni made 35 saves including all four he faced in the shootout to get the win. Mark Sibbald made 20 in the loss and allowed two-of-four shots in the the shootout.
Saturday, March 6 - Knoxville 6, Huntsville 7 - OT
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Travis Kauffeldt scored with :26 left in overtime capping an amazing rally by the Huntsville Havoc that finished with a 7-6 win over the Knoxville Ice Bears.
Knoxville held a 4-0 lead just 11:48 into the game. Mike Bulawka, Tim Vitek, Randy Johnston and Travis Hanson all scored in that span chasing Havoc starter Mark Sibbald from the game after two goals and adding two more on Dan McWhinney.
Brett Liscomb put the Havoc on the board with 7:20 left and Mike Carter added a powerplay goal with :49 left in the first to cut the scored to 4-2.
Knoxville pushed the lead to 5-3 when Kevin Swider scored with 12:18 left in the second. The Havoc wasted little time responding when Justin Rohr scored on the powerplay just over a minute later. Mike MacDonald would cut the lead to 5-4 heading into the second intermission when he scored with 6:04 left in the period.
Liscomb tied the game at 5-5 with 13:24 left in the third but Knoxville regained the one-goal lead with 11:04 left when Bulawka scored his second powerplay goal of the night.
Mike Carter tied the game at 6-6 with 7:38 left on an unassisted goal.
Dan McWhinney got the win. He allowed four goals and made 15 saves. Andrew Gallant made 31 saves in the loss.
