Huntsville Havoc News Release
PENSACOLA, FLORIDA - The Huntsville Havoc relied on their newest players and a strong defensive effort to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Friday night.
The team was bolstered by a 40 save effort by goalkeeper Mike DeLaVergne.
"We didn't have our best early on, but Deli was huge in net for us," said Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo. "We played our best period of the season in the third on both ends of the ice."
It took less than a minute for the Havoc (2-1-0) to take the lead when Zach Nieminen scored his third goal in as many games, taking the feed from Rob Darrar just 48 seconds into the contest.
Pensacola (1-2-0) evened the game later in the period, taking advantage of a slashing call on Huntsville's Peter Sikalis, and the game was knotted at one going into the first intermission. The goal was the first powerplay goal allowed by the Havoc this season.
Neither team gave an inch in a scoreless second period, but Darrar finally broke through about midway into the final stanza, scoring his second point of the game on assists from Trevor Gerling and Derek Perl.
The Havoc stalwart defense stepped up for the remaining ten minutes, slamming the door on 15 shots in the third period and committing no penalties to close the door on a 2-1 victory.
Darrar and Nieminen are tied for the league lead in goals scored by rookies with three each. DeLaVergne leads the league in saves with 94.
