Huntsville Havoc News Release
PENSACOLA, FLA. - After spotting the home team a two-goal lead, the Havoc exploded for five in the second period at the Pensacola Bay Center and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Ice Flyers.
Huntsville recorded a pair of powerplay goals, both by rookie defenseman Connor Schmidt.
"I am really happy with tonight's effort," said Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo. "Despite playing a good first period, we dug ourselves in to a hole. However, the guys stuck to the game plan and with Deli (goalkeeper Mike DeLaVergne) making some big saves, it allowed us to get back in to the game. Once we got the lead, we did a good job shutting them down the rest of the way."
Pensacola's Brian Bowen got the Ice Flyers (1-4-0) on the board first with a powerplay goal about midway through the opening period. Brett D'Andrea doubled the home team's lead a few minutes later and the first period ended with a 2-0 Pensacola lead.
The Havoc (3-1-0) came roaring back after the break, scoring five times in less than ten minutes.
Huntsville's Derek Perl started the comeback for the Havoc at the 9:24 mark, stealing the puck deep in the Ice Flyers zone and quickly working his way from the corner to the slot, slipping the puck past goalkeeper Andrew D'Agostini for Perl's first score of the season.
About four minutes later, Rob Darrar scored his fourth goal of the season, backhanding a rebound from a Zach Nieminen shot to tie the game at two.
Schmidt gave the Havoc the lead for good a few minutes later, scoring his first powerplay goal of the game by cleaning up another rebound. Less than a minute later, Ryan Salkeld scored his first goal of the season to double the lead.
Schmidt posted the exclamation point on an exciting period for the visiting team by scoring his second powerplay goal on a one-timer from a Nolan Kaiser pass - his second assist on the night -- with just over a minute remaining in the second period.
Pensacola replaced their goalie when the third period began, but the damage was done, and Huntsville locked down the Ice Flyers to come away with a comfortable 5-2 win.
