HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc failed to distance themselves from the last spot in the SPHL standings by dropping two home games over the weekend.
Friday, February 22 - Knoxville 5, Huntsville 1
HUNTSVILLE, AL - A stellar performance between the pipes by Bryan Hince helped the Knoxville Ice Bears defeat the Huntsville Havoc, 5-1.
Knoxville was paced by Mark Van Vliet, who tallied one goal. Van Vliet scored 14:16 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Knoxville. Kevin Flather provided the assist.
The Ice Bears' offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 25.0 shots per game they average.
Knoxville additionally got points from Eric Satim, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Knoxville included Dan Bremner, who had one and Matt Pierce, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Knoxville were Shaun Arvai, who had two and Brendan Taylor and David Segal, who each chipped in one.
Huntsville put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 20.1 it averages per game.
The Havoc were led by Brent Tamane, who took three shots.
Hince recorded 28 saves for Knoxville. The Ice Bears totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Dan McWhinney rejected 23 shots on goal for Huntsville. The Havoc totaled 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors and two majors and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
Saturday, February 16 - Huntsville 1, Columbus 4
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Columbus Cottonmouths relied on the sparkling performance of Ian Vigier in net to grab a 3-1 win against the Huntsville Havoc.
Huntsville's power play was ineffective against Columbus' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.
The Cottonmouths were led by Sam Bowles, who registered one goal. Bowles scored 5:25 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Mark Thorburn picked up the assist.
The Columbus penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 38 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Huntsville power plays. The 31 shots that the Cottonmouths put on net surpassed Columbus' average of 22.3 shots per game this season.
Columbus additionally got points from Thorburn, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Derek Pallardy as well. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Kevin Kessler, who had one and Jordan Braid and Matt Gingera, who contributed two a piece.
The Havoc racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and three majors for 63 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Havoc stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Havoc were led by Anthony Battaglia, who scored the team's only goal. Battaglia scored 16:05 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Kyle Laughlin provided the assist.
Columbus' Vigier stopped 29 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Cottonmouths registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. Dan McWhinney rejected 28 shots on goal for Huntsville. For the Havoc, Corey Fulton was ejected from the game.
