Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Michael Hauschild allowed one run over seven innings while leading Corpus Christi to a 3-1 decision over Arkansas Sunday at Whataburger Field before 6,419.
The Hooks took two of three from the Travelers for their ninth consecutive series victory, and at 37-18 lead Midland by 8 ½ games in the Texas League South Division first-half race. The magic number is 7.
Hauschild (5-1) yielded eight hits, three of which came in one frame. He struck out two, walked none, threw 85 pitches (57 strikes), and rolled 14 ground ball outs. Hauschild put down 11 straight hitters from the third to the seventh.
Travis Ballew earned his first save, cleaning up a two-on, no-out quandary in the eighth. He labored in the ninth as two men reached with one out. Ballew then got Anthony Bemboom to fly to left and fanned Jared Mitchell.
Ballew, a right-hander from Texas State, has not allowed a run in 14 appearances.
Arkansas took a 1-0 second-inning lead when Bemboom laced a two-out single to right-center field, which tallied Raywilly Gomez (single). Bemboom and Mitchell were stranded when Drew Maggi bounced out to Jio Mier at shortstop.
Corpus Christi stirred two-out trouble for Nate Smith during the home second. Mier and Conrad Gregor singled and Danry Vasquez reached on a free pass. The rally evaporated when Bemboom picked up Brett Booth's swinging bunt and threw him out.
From there, Smith retired 10 of the next 11 Hooks. He left after five innings, three hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
That's when conditions dramatically deteriorated for the Travelers. Nate Hyatt (1-1) coughed up three runs on two hits, two walks, and a sacrifice fly. RBI singles from Colin Moran and Gregor sandwiched Mier's sacrifice fly.
Moran has a six-game hitting streak.
The Hooks depart Monday on an eight-game road trip to Midland and San Antonio, returning to Whataburger Field June 17 for a 13-game homestand. Corpus Christi hosts the 79th Texas League All-Star Game, presented by CITGO, on Tuesday, June 30.
