Hassell Returns As Replacement Player Again For Fever

INDIANAPOLIS - Six-year WNBA veteran Jessica Davenport, the Indiana Fever's 6-5 reserve center who has been sidelined with a left tibia stress fracture, will undergo season-ending surgery later this month. She is one of four Fever stars already expected to remain out of the lineup until at least mid-July.
Davenport is part of an injured Fever foursome that combined for 60 starts last year during the regular season and playoffs. Included on the list are Katie Douglas (bulging disc in lower back), Erin Phillips (torn right meniscus) and Jeanette Pohlen (torn left ACL). All four injured players drew starting assignments during the 2012 season while accounting for 43 percent of scoring and 36 percent of rebounding on Indiana's championship team.
A fifth Fever injury was sustained in its home game against Phoenix, June 8, when first-round draft pick Layshia Clarendon sprained an ankle. She missed last Sunday's game at Washington, but is expected to return Saturday when Indiana hosts Chicago at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Returning to the club is Jasmine Hassell who signed with the Fever as a replacement player on Friday, joining Erin Thorn as emergency hardship replacements the WNBA allows to fill active roster positions vacated by injury. Hassell was Indiana's second-round draft pick last April. She was waived in training camp and later recalled as a replacement player for its opening game. Douglas' extended absence allowed the Fever another replacement this week.
