Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC-Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today that the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League have assigned defenseman Jared Nightingale and goaltender Ryan Munce.

Nightingale, a fan favorite, returns to Charlotte for his third season with the club. In 2008-09, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman began the season with the Checkers before getting called up to the Wolfpack in December. In 22 games in Charlotte, he collected six assists and 106 minutes in penalties. In 49 games with Hartford, the 26-year-old, Jackson, Mich. native scored two goals, five assists and added 121 penalty minutes.

"I give a lot of credit to the ownership and coaching staff of the Checkers for putting together a contending team this year," said Nightingale. "I am excited to get the season going and look forward to challenging for a championship."

Prior to turning pro in 2006-07, Nightingale skated four seasons with Michigan State University, helping the Spartans capture the 2006 CCHA Tournament Championship.

Munce, 24, comes to the Checkers after spending the last two seasons with the now-defunct Mississippi Sea Wolves of the ECHL. In 2008-09, he posted a 24-24-5 record with a 3.21 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. He led the ECHL in games played (54), minutes (3,219), shots against (2,024), saves (1,852) and shootout wins (6).

In 175 career ECHL games, the 6-foot-2 goaltender from Mississauga, Ontario has compiled a 84-67-15 record with a 2.96 GAA and .915 save percentage. He has also appeared in 13 games in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals and Syracuse Crunch.

Before joining the pro ranks, Munce tended goal for three seasons for the Ontario Hockey League's Sarnia Sting. He was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2003 World Under-18 Championships.

The Checkers' schedule is now available and they are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL and 16th as an affiliate of the New York Rangers. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date.
